titleExperiences with the BSCW Shared Workspace System as the Backbone of a Virtual Learning Environment for Students
case study
description Conclusions: From the psychological point of view learning is an individual action. From the pedagogical point of view learning can be assisted by context and collaboration. Our field study showed that the BSCW system was a useful and promising tool to establish a network of communication and collaboration among students and teacher. The findings will be used to evolutionary redesign the system which thereby can be augmented by the perspectives and demands of the users as participating actors of the design and use of virtual collaborative learning environments. From the students point of view the availability of working materials and results as well as the immediacy to communicate to others was considered as a great advantage and raised the level of motivation and effort. For the teacher the immediacy of communication and the options to overview the actions and results of each student was the most important effect.

descriptionchange from proprietary to internet standards
The product line has been transformed from a proprietary system to one that embraces support for most Internet standards. Lotus recognized the need to provide an environment for development and deployment on both sides; proprietary and the Internet-related. As each version has been released, Lotus has added more support for HTML integration, Java, and JavaScript, as well as email protocols such as POP, IMAP, NNTP, LDAP, and S/MIME to name a few.

titleComparing Two Approaches to Remote Mailbox Access: IMAP vs. POP
email
description There are three different paradigms for accessing remote message stores (or "mailboxes"). They are: offline, online, and disconnected. In "offline" operation, the mail client program, or "mail user agent" (MUA), fetches messages from a mail server to the machine where the mail program is running, and then deletes them from the server. In "online" operation, messages are left on the mail server and manipulated remotely by mail client programs. In "disconnected" operation, a mail client connects to the mail server, makes a "cache" copy of selected messages, and then disconnects from the server, later to reconnect and resynchronize with the server. In both online and disconnected access modes, mail is left on the server, which is important when people use different computers at different times to access their messages.
